Many people view tai chi largely as an exercise that is done extremely slowly or as a sort of meditation. Also, in case you're interested, another good way to enhance your appearance is by exercising. Have a look at the TACFIT Commando workouts by Scott Sonnon, it is an excellent training system. To some extent, they are correct but it is very much a conventional martial art style. Tai Chi Chuan is the first name for this martial art style and it signifies "supreme ultimate fist." This hints that the original practitioners of tai chi realized its value as a martial art style, even if most people today have forgotten this.
Since tai chi is slow moving, individuals think that tai chi is not a martial art style. Whereas, you will see quick and strong movements in karate and kung fu. Tai chi, on the other hand, is done in what looks to be slow motion. It doesn't mean, however, that the same movements cannot also be executed rapidly. Actually, it takes more control to move slowly, which makes the movement more exact. To actually learn how to apply tai chi as a martial art style, you'd have to practice it at different speeds, but moving slowly gives you greater coordination and balance.
There's a standard tai chi practice called push hands. This involves two individuals pushing against one another, looking to get the other off balance. There are competitive events where this is practiced, just like sparring competitions in karate. The idea with tai chi push hands is to use as little force as is possible. You try to make the opponent become off balance by using their own power and weight. This requires a great deal of practice, obviously, but a master at tai chi push hands can be quite a powerful martial artist. It is best to learn this by searching for a tai chi school or a qualified instructor as opposed to learning it all by yourself. Simply practicing the tai chi form won't be enough to teach you the martial arts uses.
If you're interested in learning tai chi as a martial art style, then you should find a school or instructor that has this focus. Practicing tai chi form as purely as an exercise is perfect for your health and will greatly reduce stress but you won't really develop your martial art skills. By learning the tai chi form, you'll have a good foundation of the martial art style but you'll not know how to put it to use effectively in a competition or as a form of self defense. If you don't live in close proximity to a qualified tai chi instructor with a martial arts background, you'll find a few books, DVDs and sites that can point you in the right direction.
Karate is thought to be an external martial art style but tai chi is known as an internal martial art style. Tai chi is not only push hands as they also use swords and other sorts of traditional Chinese weapons. Tai chi is an excellent form of work out but it is also an excellent form of martial art.
