Spinal cord injuries occur from a lot of different mishaps. The most common cause of spinal column injuries come from car accidents. Other than accidents, activities such as contact sports, weight lifting, improper posture at work and slippage may also cause herniated discs.
There are two major types of spinal column injuries - complete and incomplete. Incomplete injuries mean that the affected person is injured in the spine, with loss of some motor function or sensation, but the loss is not permanent. Most incomplete spinal injuries can be treated. Complete spinal injuries are the total nightmare. This means that at the point where the spine is injured, everything below it is paralyzed. If someone gets injured at the neck, that unfortunate person then is paralyzed from the neck below which is basically the whole body.
Exercise help strengthen back muscles which support the spine. Strengthened muscles provide great support for the spinal cord and prevent minor injuries. However, before including an exercise figure in your routine, make sure to know the risks and study the right form to prevent unwanted injuries. Dumbbell exercises like shrugs and bent over rows are very effective. You can also do some regular back stretching to keep the vertebra in place. Yoga and Pilates are also great for keeping your posture perfect.
As we grow older, we need to keep nutrition in. The complication brought about by herniated discs are a lot to handle. This medical condition occurs when the spinal discs become less elastic which in turn provides less cushion between vertebra. When the discs rupture, they bulge out and can cause lots of friction between vertebrae. But herniated discs do not just occur on old people. Accidents can also cause herniated discs. Same thing with repetitive spine straining activities.
When the discs become herniated, the nerves may get pinched or compresses which would result in irritated or damaged nerves. With compressed or damaged nerves, there would be a problem with nerve signals. Common herniated disc symptoms are electric shock pain, tingling numbness, muscle weakness, and bowel or bladder problems.
There are a lot of herniated disc treatment such as rest and activity medication, cold and hot compress, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and oral steroids. Other medications include narcotic pain medications and muscle relaxers. In worst cases such as pain and sensory abnormalities, surgery may be required.
