Fruits and Greens? That's Simply Too Radical

I ran into an old patient and friend of mine in our fun, local dangle-out, Sunny Farms (a REAL meals store), the opposite day. She got me thinking.

And it's all about one phrase--radical. And her face. Her loss.

After we got our "hello's" and "how are you's" out of the way in which, I expressed my condolences for her lately passing husband, whom I had heard died of a sudden heart attack. I sensed the depth of her sadness. Her courage was inspiring.

Then she moved on to the subject that seems to follow me round loads--meals--for those who can think about that. She mentioned that she would love to eat like me, however I was simply too, well, radical.

Her pricey, sort face and that phrase--radical--have been flitting out and in of my brain ever since.

Okay, perhaps I've lost perspective here. You tell me--I trust you. I am going to tell you exactly what I ate yesterday, and you tell me for those who think it was too radical and e-mail me at Dr.Leslie@DrLeslieVanRomer.com - I am going to take heed to you.

For breakfast grazing: one, entire cantaloupe, about 1/3rd of a watermelon, 4 bananas, 4 nectarines, 1 apple, a bunch of grapes (no, I didn't depend them)

For lunch: one large glass of do-it-yourself vegetable juice (Nash's natural green veggies--you're right, it would not style so good) and one very large (it stuffed up the biggest Pyrex bowl within the 4-bowl set--I know, I'm such just a little oink-oink, aren't I?) green-leafy, vegetable salad with two kinds of lettuce, sprouts, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, purple cabbage, onions, purple pepper, cauliflower, and avocado

Dressing made simple: ½ contemporary lemon and balsamic vinegar

For dinner: one medium dimension salad like above (make sufficient salad at lunchtime for dinner too, girls--and a few of you guys--then you don't have to drag out all that stuff once more--I'm too darn lazy for that) and a steamed yam with a special topping--pureed avocado, contemporary tomatoes, onions, and lemon (yummy and filling!)

For snacks: You guessed it, more contemporary fruit, and a pair handfuls of raw, unsalted almonds

I admit that green, funny tasting stuff that I name juice is a little bit of a stretch, however are fruit and veggies (and entire grains and beans) actually so radical?

They style great. They fill me up. They provide me plenty of energy. They hold me from having these nagging, gnawing cravings. They hold fats out of my arteries and off my body. They're straightforward to buy--no more lists (and that is coming from someone who has two brain cells--info in one and the same info out the opposite--quick).

They save me time. Actually, need quick meals? Vegatables and fruits are the fastest quick meals there are--simply wash, sometimes chop, open mouth and chew. You may't get any quicker than that.

Oh, yeah, one minor element I virtually forgot--these are the meals that hold these nasty diseases away, like heart disease, most cancers, diabetes, strokes, osteoporosis, and more.

Possibly I'm off here, however when I think of radical I think of a breast lower off, a prostate lower out, or chemo and radiation invading your body and taking over your life.

I feel radical is buzz-sawing your chest, ripping aside ribs, and reducing into your heart.

I feel radical is shedding the use of one-half of your body--a significant stroke--and not having the ability to care for your self, much much less anyone else.

I feel radical is getting pictures day by day to control diabetes (to not point out going blind or getting a leg off), or taking a powerful drug day by day in hopes of counteracting the sick-effects of all the artery-clogging ldl cholesterol eaten each day.

I feel radical is the excessive value of blood strain treatment--impotence.

I feel radical isn't having the ability to do what I wish to do due to illness or incapacity, like being with my children or working or strolling or swimming or snowboarding or simply hanging out with comfort and joy.

But entire, contemporary fruit and veggies? Someway they only do not seem so radical to me.

How might eating delicious meals, with a wide range of tastes and textures and colors, the very meals that may better and delay my life, be considered radical? What are your thoughts?

As I walked away from my friend, I considered how all of us have our own approach of taking a look at issues and how all of our thoughts and emotions are essential and valid.

She thought I was radical because of fruits and vegetables. Yet, at that very second, she was experiencing one of the crucial radical adjustments of her whole life--the loss of a lifelong spouse.

And the very sad half is, because the specialists tell us, ninety five% of all heart disease is completely preventable--with the meals, albeit considered radical, and exercise selections we make each day.

The question stays: Could her husband still be here together with her?

So what's more radical to you, my friend? Washing, opening mouth, and chewing or taking part in Russian roulette along with your heart and your body? The great thing about it is--it's your body and your life and your decision.

But as you are deciding what to place into your mouth, simply take one second to think about how your kids or your mom or your spouse or your friend would really feel for those who got sick, or worse.

My friend's deep unhappiness lingers with me still.
