Green living can be challenging for younger people. These young people are used to the latest conveniences and are not often willing to give them up. It's even hard to turn off the TV for those older people who know what it's like not to have one because they've gotten in the habit of watching regular programming. We're so used to our various electrical appliances, and we wonder why we wouldn't want to open a can by hand when an electric can opener is readily available. When people grow up without making it a habit to conserve energy, it is a hard habit to break.
An electrical appliance that we could learn to do without is the tumble dryer. If you've been around for awhile, you may remember what it was like for your mother to hang the laundry out to dry on an outside clothesline. Perhaps you can recall how it was having to grab the clothes off the line before the first rain drops fell. Like most everything, finding a cheaper way to do things only happens when people are out of money. Before people started using credit cards, everything was much different. There was a time when the latest convenience was a luxury that most people could not afford. Many people are familiar with the old expression "waste not , want not". Now wasting seems to be a full-time business.
You probably have never even heard of a clothes airer. As a matter of fact, the majority of people have their laundry done by someone else. Typically, it is the mother's job and so she is the one who must try to save energy when using a clothes dryer. The clothes airer is a very dependable method of drying laundry since no electricity is used. Of course, using a clothes airer takes some getting used to, but you can dry a full washer load using the maxi floor standing airer. Since it is portable, it can easily be moved so that you always get optimal sunlight. This would have made doing laundry much easier back in the early days of using washing machines.
You can find a variety of clothes airers. They can be mounted on the wall, either side by side or in a double-decker design. You can easily fit them into wall space that is normally wasted. Another model is designed to be used in the bathtub to dry more delicate clothing items. Another one for over the bath is the pullout washing line that extends up to 70 feet. The clothes airers can be used both inside and outside, and will not only save you money, but also your clothes will last longer.
The Energy Saving Trust is one organization that advocates using appliances that save energy. Things such as washing machines, freezers, and refrigerators--things that conserve energy but do not totally eliminate energy use. Energy-efficient windows and lights along with increased insulation are among their recommendations. But they are completely silent when it comes to clothes airers and the money saved in energy costs.
