Chronic And Sonorous Snoring And The Reason Why You Should Not Take It Lightly



A lot of individuals consider snoring as a thing they don't need to be very worried about. For these people, it is something benign, and that everyone experiences them at least once in their lifetimes, and that chronic cases pose no health risks. However, frequent and loud snoring can be a sign of bigger problem - sleep apnea. This condition is characterized by intermittent pauses in breathing throughout the night, which is potentially life-threatening.

Snoring and sleep apnea are often mentioned in the same breath because they share the same predisposing and precipitating factors which include senility, diminished tone in the muscles supporting the upper respiratory structures, narrowed airway due to fat tissue build up, and anatomical features of the face like deviated septum which obstruct the normal flow of air during respiration. Taking in alcohol and certain drugs contribute to snoring and sleep apnea because it makes the muscles supporting the air passage relaxed. Sleeping on one's back and breathing through the mouth are known to contribute and aggravate snoring as well.

The good news is that both snoring and sleep apnea can be prevented and treated. Treatment for sleep apnea is tricky though because most of its sufferers do not know that they experience disruptions in breathing during sleep, even upon waking up. Most of the time it is the bed partner who sees it. Those suffering from sleep apnea only seek treatment when they already experience symptoms like persistent lethargy and excessive daytime sleepiness.

Treatments for snoring are also effective for sleep apnea. Snoring pillow are a popular example of snoring products available in the market. These pillows are designed with back sleepers in mind. Snoring pillows are contoured to keep the head and neck aligned during sleep, preventing the chin from being thrust onto the chest, thereby maintaining the airway patent and reducing the sonority of snoring.

Sleep apnea patients may also be given implements such as snoring chin strap. The main purpose of these devices is to retrain the person to breathe through the nose instead of through the mouth. When we breathe in through the mouth, the air hits the back of the throat directly which has more soft tissue than the nasal cavity and thus create substantial vibrations.

Snoring chin straps and pillows can truly contribute to the reduction of snoring, that is, if you remember to wear or utilize them. Both of these options serve as temporary cures. Hence it is still best to seek medical attention to identify appropriate long-term cures, rule out other disorders causing you to snore, and discover health issues resulting from chronic snoring which you may not know of.
