Raising A Healthy And Fit Family

One of the biggest, no pun intended, problems in the United States and Western civilization in general is obesity, and it is because most families don't have their own exercise regimens. Some say it is the family that prays, but many others affirm that the family that PLAYS together does stay together. This couldn't be more true in the case of family fitness. You can get your family out of their lethargic slump by following the steps below, or at least most of them.

First, you'll want to be aware of what the boys and girls enjoy doing. If your hubby and your sons are crazy about the likes of Brett Aikman and the Dallas Packers (yes, we ladies know who's who in the NFL, albeit barely), how about heading to the park for some flag football on the weekend? Mosey on down to the park if you have a daughter or two who enjoys jogging. Even if your kids are more into video games than outside play, consider looking "dance pad" games that can be used on popular game consoles, which have been suggested to help in the weight loss process. You can help your kids sweat off the excess pounds and perhaps join them in busting a move! It's a whole new way to look at video games.

Exercise is just the first part of the process, but the war against obesity continues in the kitchen. Snacks such as carrot and celery sticks, apples, seedless grapes, pretzels, air popped popcorn, and graham crackers make excellent choices. And healthy too - we know from experience that kids will grab these without a moment's notice. Fill your cabinets with these healthier snacks and you might find yourself surprised that your family doesn't even notice the difference! Replacing sodas with bottled water and organic fruit juices while you're at it can help your cause. Diet sodas as well are verboten - do NOT opt for a product overloaded with sodium!

Subtle changes in your family's eating habits can have long lasting effects. It is never too late to make a healthy change for you and your family. But be discreet! If you tell your children that you're making a change to the family eating habits, they are less likely to accept it, rather than not even questioning the change when grabbing a snack.

Family fitness is just what you need to ensure that your family is well taken care of. But always remember to lead by example. Children are very impressionable and will always follow the lead of adults whom they think are right, so make sure you do - and eat - the right things. But don't make those habits sound like a chore! People in general accept change if they know that there is some enjoyment in the equation.
