Thyroid Hormones Can Cause Change In Your Body Shape

A person who is struggling with their weight could have a problem with their thyroid. That is because of a connection between the thyroid disease and a person's metabolic rate. How much energy a person uses when they are at rest or during an activity is measured in part with the hormones produced by the thyroid. In the past doctors used the BMR to determine whether a person might have a thyroid condition or not. For people who had a slower metabolism the reason was a thyroid that did not produce enough hormones. If a person had a faster metabolism they were diagnosed with an over active gland.

Differences in BMRs are associated with changes in energy balance. A high BMR can lead to weight loss and a low BMR can lead to weight gain and since changes in thyroid can lead to changes in BMR although the thyroid hormones do not control the BMR by themselves as there are other factors in a person's body that also have an effect, but it could help to explain why weight gain is one of the symptoms of low thyroid condition that a doctor considers when evaluating the possibility of a thyroid condition, especially if the weight gain is in a woman.

If a person faces the problem of unexplained weight loss, they could be suffering from the thyroid producing too many hormones. It is possible to link the severity of the problem to how many pounds are lost. When dealing with this condition a person will find that their metabolism is working faster. To keep the body fueled a person has to up their caloric intake. Without enough of an energy supply due to lack of food, a person will find their body using up any stored fat it may have.

When a person is suffering from hypothyroidism the BMR is decreased. The low thyroid diet pills can cause some weight gain and like with hyperthyroidism the weight gain is often greater in those individuals with more severe hypothyroidism, but the decrease in BMR due to hypothyroidism is usually much less dramatic than the marked increase seen in hyperthyroidism, leading to more modest alterations in weight due to the under active thyroid. Increased salt and water retention is one of the main things that someone picks up a few pounds if they have an under active thyroid. Soemone may not see a larger increase but will usually see smaller increases on the scale because of the lack of hormones. If weight gain is the only symptom of hypothyroidism that is present, it is less likely that the weight gain is solely due to the thyroid.

Extra fluids in the body are the main reason that a person sees a change in the scale if they are not producing enough hormones. When the hormones are balanced the extra pounds can come off quickly. Once a person is able to get their hormones in balance they should find that they can return to a normal body weight. It is likely that someone who has had trouble with their body shape might have other problems especially if through treatment they are able to get their hormone levels that are produced by the thyroid into a proper balance. People can stay fit and trim by watching what they eat and exercising once they have their over active or under active thyroid issues controlled through medication.

Companies have marketed products that help a person shed pounds quickly based on the way the thyroid works. It is not always safe for a person to try to use this type of treatment. For that reason if a person needs to lose weight they should do it through diet and exercise.
