What You Need to Know to Plan a Successful Fitness Program



It's no surprise that many thousands of people are injured each year in the name of fitness. Some are injured because they do not exercise safely, and others suffer injuries because they are not fit. It is true that you become more prone to injuries at work, home, or engaging in a little weekend game if you are not in shape. Start out easy and don't be in a rush to improve your fitness level. Be honest with yourself about your state of fitness. A lot of new exercisers get hurt because they are more out of shape than they realize. So what happens? Because these people haven't factored safety into their workouts, they just proceed "full speed ahead" and then wonder why they get injured. Not a week goes by without a report of someone in his or her golden years successfully performing an amazing physical accomplishment. Did you read about Fauja Singh? He's 100 years old and - even though he came in last - he is now in the Guinness Book of Records for successfully completing a marathon in Toronto in October 2011. Many senior citizens - in their 60s and 70s and even older - are more fit and healthy than men and women half their age. Your age is no excuse - or block - to you achieving the best shape and fitness level you've ever had. Of course you have to get cleared by your doctor, and then you need to accommodate your age. So take it very easy and there is no reason to hurry anything at all. You've all heard the saying, "Use it or lose it." This is especially true of your body. Food is very important for maintaining energy and meeting your daily caloric needs; however, you also need some form of exercise each day to keep your body fit and healthy. Just start with whatever type of activity attracts you and, as you proceed, your intuition and your body will direct you to the optimum regimen. To put it another way, not only will your physical body start to improve and feel better, but your mind will also benefit and your thinking will become clearer. Likewise, when you feel your energy start to increase and your musculature improves, you will naturally want to see even more improvement.

What you do for exercise will determine how much you tear down your body. It is essential, regardless of your exercise program, that you allow your body sufficient time to rebuild - and heal - after each session.

Besides giving your muscles time to recover after a workout, you also have to allow for a sufficient amount of sleep each night. During sleep, your body rejuvenates itself from your daily activities, including exercise. Another side effect from deficient sleep is that your body is more prone to injuries from your exercise regimen. Adequate sleep will leave you feeling refreshed, with high energy levels, which will make you feel great. It has long been put forth by health professionals and the medical community that anyone - no matter what their age - can improve their health and fitness. If your fitness level is alarmingly low, it may help motivate you if you start an exercise program with a friend or family member. Seriously, you can get your partner to join you or even somebody you know. Then with that approach it can become a good social outlet plus it is easier with somebody else. Maybe you prefer to exercise alone. If so, than that's great. The main goal is to have some kind of exercise pattern in place. Don't try to run the three-minute mile the first week of your exercise regimen. Start out slowly - maybe a walk in the park or at the mall - and add in some simple exercises or stretches when you are at home.
