Important Facts Regarding Sports and Exercise Safety

Sports and exercise safety should hopefully be one of your major concerns and priorities in your own fitness program. Don't think that just because you only work out or play in sporting events every now and then that safety is not an issue. Those that work out less than others are actually more susceptible to hurting themselves.

Likewise, if you play a lot of sports or exercise daily, injuries can also be coming your way. Higher levels of physical activity can actually stress your body which may lead to potential injuries. Stress is actually a precursor to injuries that may not have otherwise happened. Failing to prepare, we prepare to fail; this is true for all those that exercise and are easily injured. You need to warm-up and stretch all the time. If you play sports or work out regularly, or even if you don't, these tips will help you stay injury free.

No matter what kind of exercise or sport you're involved with, there's a simple way to prepare yourself for it. Warming up is something everyone should do, no matter how old you are or how strong, fast or fit. Warm-ups are critical for everyone, including well conditioned athletes. When you do this, you are increasing your blood flow to your muscles and extremities which will help prepare them for exertion. Part of your warm-up period should involve some type of stretching. Stretching is another activity that's critical, even if you're young and/or in great physical shape.

Athletes who start off the season after they haven't played for a few months always feel a little rusty at first. Returning to your optimal shape can be challenging, especially if you're a little out of shape. The best way to avoid this scenario is to make sure you work out consistently all year long. You do not have to train hard, unless you want to, but rather do a maintenance level of exercising or training to prevent the massive drop. So obviously this is your call and entirely up to you, but the rewards are certainly worth it. Injuries early in the season are fairly common, but if you start off in good shape, this probably won't happen to you.

When you begin working out, start off slowly and gradually. Of course we know you will do a proper warm up with appropriate stretches. But still, you are just warmed up and not at full training heat. Start with an exercise that's not too challenging for you and gradually increase your efforts. Just as it's best to begin driving a car slowly and gradually increasing the speed, so your body needs time to reach its full capacity. Starting your car and then immediately going 70 miles per hour wouldn't be a good idea, as you probably know. In this manner, your body is very similar, and starting off slowly can help prevent injuries. Many injuries in sports and exercise can be avoided by proper preparation, the right gear and following the rules of the sport at all times. There are certain ways you can make yourself safer by doing the right activities before playing or working out. The more limber and well stretched you are before working out or playing, the less chance you'll be injured. Injuries are often the result of tight muscles or incorrect movement, and stretching can greatly reduce the chances of this. If that's not enough reason for you to engage in stretching, you should also consider that this practice will also improve your abilities in whatever sport you're engaged in.
